#11 Rocks that Float!

Rohan loves collecting rocks! He has a collection of all three forms of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Igneous rocks are made from fire and heat. When volcanoes erupt and the liquid rock comes up to the earth’s surface, then a new igneous rock is made. There are five kinds of igneous rocks, depending on the mix of minerals in the rocks. There are more than 700 types of igneous rocks!

Sedimentary rocks are formed by sediments deposited over time, usually as layers at the bottom of lakes and oceans. These rocks cover 70% of the Earth's rocky surface, but only make up a small percentage of the Earth’s crust compared to other types of rocks.

Metamorphic rocks are formed when minerals in rocks undergo changes due to immense heat and pressure. These rocks were originally igneous or sedimentary, but due to the movements of the earth’s crust, got changed. Metamorphic rocks are the least common of the three kinds of rocks. Did you know diamonds are metamorphic rocks!

Most rocks as you know sink in water. But Rohan has a rock in his collection that will float.

Which one of these is Rohan’s floating rock? Marble, Pumice, Slate and Sandstone.

It is typically light coloured, and is a light and porous rock. Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano. Lava with gases in it froths and cools and hardens into pumice. Just like all other...
