Earthquake

Have you ever felt the ground beneath you shake? An earthquake takes place when two tectonic plates collide or slip past each other; they cause vibrations that spread across the surface like ripples. This is called an earthquake.

Simply Put: Sudden violent shaking of the ground cause by movement of tectonic plates.

PARTS OF AN EARTHQUAKE

Fault: A fault is a crack on the earth’s surface where the tectonic plates slip to create an earthquake.

Hypocentre: The hypocentre is the point under the Earth’s surface from where an earthquake originates.

Epicentre: The epicentre is the point on the Earth’s surface, directly above the hypocentre.

Earthquakes make the ground shake. Then how are they linked to giant waves? What does an earthquake have to do with a Tsunami?

Tectonic plates of the earth collide due to earthquakes. This causes the sea floor to rise or fall. Large quantity of water gets displaced and huge waves are formed. The sea floor near the coast is not that deep.So the waves become even high and visible. These are tsunami waves.

The movement of tectonic plates due to earthquake also cause movement in sea water. Huge waves are formed and when they reach the coast, they come even high as the coast-line is shallow. These waves are tsunami waves.

When an earthquake occurs in the sae, the sea bed rises or falls. This movement causes rapid motion in water and tsumani waves are formed.
