#23 Can you Haiku?

Did you know that there is a special type of poem that does not rhyme? This form of poetry is known as Haiku. It is a Japanese form of poetry, which is often called ‘the wordless poem!’ In Japanese, Hai means ‘humour’ and Ku means ‘poem’.

How is Haiku written?

A Haiku is a three line poem that does not rhyme at all. The first and last lines have five syllables while the line in the middle has seven syllables. Haiku poems are fun to write!

Haiku are mostly about nature or seasons but you can write a one on almost anything, from food to animals to sports or cars! The last line or the third line of the poem has to mention something about the subject that you are writing about.

While writing Haiku about nature, one can choose from a wide variety of subjects like the sky, seas, oceans, plants, animals, fire and wind. Though Haiku poems are usually about nature and seasons, they need not necessarily be about these two subjects, these poems can be funny too. The only thing that needs to be kept in mind while writing funny Haiku poems is to keep the ending unexpected!

All Haiku poems need to include a Kigo. This is a word that gives readers a clue about the subject of the poem. If Haiku is on seasons then the word should give the reader a clue about the season being described. For example, if one is writing about winter, they can write a word or a thing that specifies winter, like snow. The word can be anything related to that particular season. Haikus are divided into two parts, with a break after either the first or the second line.
